Finder compared the cost of a hospital bed for a 30-year-old traveler for one week from July 2 to July 9 at 10 travel destinations.

Finder is based on data from the World Health Organization (WHO), Covermore, and Airbnb.

Hospital beds can cost travelers an average of 44 times more than buying travel insurance, and in some countries the cost is much higher than average, according to the study.

This was most evident in the UK, where the average cost of a hospital bed per night ($1,125) was 125 times the daily cost of basic insurance ($9). Even in Singapore, the average cost per night of a hospital bed ($1,168) was 97 times higher than the daily cost of basic insurance ($12).

The other leading countries were Japan, New Zealand and the United States, where the difference between hospital beds and travel insurance costs was 75, 81 and 45 times higher respectively.

At the other end of the scale, a hospital bed in India ($17) costs almost the same as travel insurance ($12), but even there travelers can save considerably by taking out one. travel insurance.

Figures highlight the financial benefits of buying travel insurance

The study also compared the two figures to the price of Airbnb rentals in each country's capital (except the United States, where New York City was used instead). Finder found that in six out of 10 travel destinations surveyed, travelers would pay more for a hospital bed than Airbnb.

This was particularly evident in Singapore, where the daily cost of a hospital bed ($1,168) was 13 times higher than the city's average Airbnb night ($90).

According to Graham Cooke, head of consumer research at Finder, data has shown that not having travel insurance while traveling abroad can have serious negative financial consequences if things go wrong.

"Medical expenses abroad will cost you an arm and a leg, it's the last thing you need to worry about if something goes wrong," he said. "Basic insurance, on the other hand, costs $10 to $20 a day, and you can lower that cost if you want by increasing your deductible." It's always a good idea to purchase insurance when booking your trip. This way you are covered if something happens, like if you contract Covid.

He warned that passengers who tried to obtain a policy after the accident would have their request refused.
